Beginning Dutch oven cooking at Washoe Lake State Park Aug. 16

WASHOE VALLEY, Nev.– Join guest chefs and park staff for a traditional night of Dutch oven cooking and tasting at Washoe Lake State Park on August 16.

Bring an apron and be prepared to do some cooking. A Dutch oven is a thick-walled cast iron cooking pot with a tight-fitting lid. White hot coals are placed on top as well as below the Dutch oven to provide a more uniform internal heat.

The program is limited to 40 participants. Call 775-687-4319 to reserve your space.

Everyone will meet in the main group area pavilion from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The event is free, but there is a $ 4.00 per vehicle park entrance fee. Read the rest of this entry »

WASHOE VALLEY, Nev.– Take a leisurely stroll through Washoe Lake’s wetlands with park rangers and bird experts on July 26, 2008 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Learn ways to identify different birds in the field by sight, sound and behavior

Although the park has a few binoculars available for loan, it is advised visitors bring their own binoculars. Staff will have birding books on hand.

Everyone will meet on July 26 from 8 a.m. through 10 a.m. at the wetlands viewing area The viewing area is located one and a half miles east on East Lake Boulevard off Highway 395, exit 44, between Reno and Carson City.

The program is free.


Partial closures in Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park Backcountry

CARSON CITY, Nev.– Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park personnel announced yesterday a temporary closure of portions of the Marlette and Hobart Backcountry area. The closure will be Monday through Friday and will last through September.

Backcountry trails that will be closed are: the Lakeview Road, the section of Hobart Road between Marlette Lake and Hobart Lake, the Red House Flume Trail and the Tunnel Creek road in the Red House and Franktown Creek area. Access points that will be affected are the gate above Lakeview Estates in Carson City and the gate at the top of Musgrove Canyon, in Washoe Valley.
