Wildflower walk at Washoe Lake State Park May 10

Washoe Lake State Park

WASHOE VALLEY, Nev.–Nevada State Parks is hosting a wildflower walk at Washoe Lake State Park May 10, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 11a.m.

Join park staff for a leisurely stroll through the park to meet the wildflowers and to learn their common and scientific names, each plant’s use and whether a plant is poisonous. Park staff will also discuss climate and growing zones. Some uphill walking is involved. Children under seven are not recommended. Please bring water, a camera and a picnic lunch to enjoy after the program.

On this one-and-a-half-mile walk visitors will get to see the following types of wildflowers: Wild Phlox, Desert Peach, Bitterbrush, Balsamroot, Butterweed, Stork’s Bill, Wild Rose bushes, Cattails, Tidy Tips and more. Aspen and Willows that have returned since the fires on Deadman’s Trail will also be viewed.

 


Enjoying the outdoors with Santa and his volunteer helpers

Nevada State Parks LogoDuring his break from the gig at the mall Saturday, Santa picked up his wife, Mrs. Claus, and took a little drive out to Washoe Lake State Park.

“Boy,” he said as he played confidant of local boys and girls. “Is it pretty out here.”

Joined by some 200 visitors from Carson and Reno in a heated tent, Santa not only enjoyed the crisp air, hot cocoa and homemade cupcakes with the rest of the holiday revelers, but said he found a little bit of the spirit of the “old-Nevada Christmas” somewhere in there as well.

Washoe Lake State ParkCARSON CITY, Nev.–East Lake Boulevard has been closed due to a brush fire is burning southeast of Washoe Lake. The fire, now at about 5 acres, is in the hills east of East Lake Boulevard. The fire is near homes, but not threatening at this time.
